Two players competing for the ball during a Suthies Football Challenge match

Laws of the game — variations

  • All FIFA Laws of the Game apply to both age groups, with the variations listed here.
  • Matches are two equal halves of 20 minutes. Half-time does not exceed 3 minutes.
  • A maximum of 9 substitutes per team. No rolling substitutes — the standard substitution law is enforced.
  • The referee must be informed before any substitution is made.
  • A substitute may only enter after the player being replaced has left the field and the referee has signalled.
  • A substitute may only enter from the halfway line, during a stoppage in play.
  • Each team may participate with a squad of 20 players only.
  • A red card carries a 1-match ban.
  • Time is not stopped for injuries and there is no extra time.
  • No coaching or standing behind the goals by coaches, managers, parents, supporters or spectators. The referee may move anyone doing so, without protest.
  • Players must play in their correct age group and team (U15 or U19).

Competition format

  • Two age groups run in parallel: U15 (Juniors) and U19 (Seniors).
  • Each age group has two pools of four; every team plays each pool opponent once.
  • Pool winners and runners-up advance to the semi-finals (Winner Pool A v Runner-up Pool B, Winner Pool B v Runner-up Pool A).
  • Losing semi-finalists contest a 3rd place play-off; winners meet in the final.
  • Pool matches level at full time are recorded as a draw. Knockout matches level at full time go straight to penalties.

Tie-breakers

  • Points, then goal difference, then goals scored.
  • Still level: fewest red cards, then fewest yellow cards.
  • If teams remain inseparable, the tournament committee decides by drawing of lots.

Match day

  • Three fields — Main, B and C — run simultaneously from the first kick-off at 08:00.
  • Matches start every 45 minutes; no team plays twice in a row.
  • Teams report to their field five minutes before kick-off with a confirmed team sheet.
  • Coaches submit team sheets digitally; the field official confirms them before kick-off.
  • Results are final once the official confirms them at full time.

Player safety & kit

  • No player may wear anything dangerous — necklaces, rings, bracelets, earrings, leather or rubber bands. Players are inspected before kick-off.
  • Compulsory kit: a shirt with sleeves, shorts, socks, shinguards (suitable protective material, fully covered by the socks) and correct footwear.
  • Tape or any material worn externally on the sock must be the same colour as that part of the sock.
  • The two teams must wear colours that distinguish them from each other and from the match officials.
  • Undershirts must be a single colour matching the main colour of the shirt sleeve, or a pattern that exactly replicates the sleeve.
  • Tights must be the same colour as the main colour of the shorts.

Ground rules

  • Strictly no alcohol or smoking anywhere on the school premises.
  • All participants' bags will be searched at the gate.
  • The school is strictly cashless — refreshments are sold at the tuckshop.
  • Players must be registered at their respective schools for the year.
  • Managers and coaches are responsible for ensuring all rules are enforced.
  • Spectators who infringe any of these requirements will be asked to leave the grounds.

Sutherland High School lightning policy

The policy gives staff, learners, parents, contractors and visitors accurate warning of a prevailing storm and enough time to take shelter.

  • The campus lightning detector runs off the Weather Intelligent Systems Portal and warns of lightning activity within a 15 km radius, using South African Weather Service data.
  • One long siren (30 seconds) means imminent danger from lightning — everyone outdoors must seek shelter immediately.
  • Only brick school buildings count as suitable shelter. Never touch metal upright poles during a storm.
  • All activity on fields and at the pools stops immediately; players, officials and spectators must take shelter. Non-compliance may result in disciplinary action.
  • Any competitive match stopped this way is recorded as suspended due to weather.
  • Two short sirens (15 seconds each) signal all clear and outdoor activities may resume.
  • Lightning is an act of God. While the school takes these measures to reduce risk, no guarantee against injury or damage can be given and the school carries no liability for lightning strikes.
